Step 4: base plate installed

Last weekend was the dry run. This weekend was the real deal. What’s a base plate? It’s the thing that allows you to connect a tow bar to the car so that the car can be pulled behind the RV. It’s kind of important that this connection is solid. I forget Cat’s actual words when she walked out and saw the work in progress, but it was some manner of “oh my God.”

I won’t bore you with the details. I’ll give you a few of the during:

When the front of the car is off you know it's serious.

That's the smile of someone who is almost certain that he can get everything back together again.

And, finally, the finished product.

This one is how it looks without the removable tabs in place. You only need those in when you're actually going to tow it.

The most delightful part was finishing with precisely the amount of leftover fasteners I was supposed to (there’s one plastic push-pin fastener that doesn’t get installed again).

Next up? Auxiliary lighting and then auxiliary and emergency braking. That’ll be another gut check.
